Categories group your articles into topics and appear as labelled sections in your portal's sidebar navigation. Every article belongs to exactly one category.
How categories relate to sections
Categories sit one level below sections. A section is the top-level group (e.g. Documentation, API Reference); categories subdivide it further (e.g. Getting Started, Authentication, Webhooks).
When a visitor opens a section, the sidebar lists all its categories — with the articles inside each one nested underneath.
FAQs and Product Updates manage their own grouping independently. The categories editor is only for article categories that belong to the Documentation section or any custom section you've created.
Creating a category
- Go to Editor → Categories.
- Click New Category in the top-right corner.
- Fill in the details in the slide-in panel:
- Name — shown in the sidebar and used to group articles in the portal.
- Icon — pick from the icon library; displayed next to the category name in the sidebar.
- Section — choose which section this category belongs to. Only article-based sections appear here (Documentation and any custom sections you've created). Defaults to Documentation.
- Description — optional; shown on the category page if your portal displays it.
- Click Create.
Creating a category inline
You don't have to leave the article editor to add a category. Whenever you're editing or creating an article, the Category field lets you type a new name and pick + New category to create it on the spot. The new category is saved and automatically selected.
Editing a category
Click Edit on any row to open the edit panel. You can update the name, icon, description, and section at any time.
Changing the section moves the category — and all articles inside it — to the new section immediately. The articles themselves are untouched; they just appear under the new section's navigation going forward.
Deleting a category
Click Delete on any row. Articles that belong to the category are not deleted — they remain in your content but will no longer be grouped under any category until you assign them a new one.
If you're removing a category because you want to restructure content, edit the affected articles first and reassign them before deleting.
Reordering articles within a category
The order of articles inside a category controls how they appear in the portal sidebar.
- Click Edit on the category you want to arrange.
- Scroll to the Article Order list in the edit panel — it shows all articles in this category, including drafts (marked with a Draft badge).
- Drag any article up or down to your preferred position.
- The new order is saved automatically when you drop.
Reordering categories within a section
The order of categories within a section is managed from the Sections editor, not here.
- Go to Editor → Sections.
- Click Edit on the section whose category order you want to change.
- Drag categories up or down in the Category Order list.
See Sections for more detail.
Filtering the categories list
The categories list supports two filters:
- Section filter — shown when you have more than one article-based section; narrows the list to a single section's categories.
- Search — filters by category name or description as you type.
